From my daughter, I learn that one must always walk with a song, that there is no bad time to break into a dance. I learn that the world is also bears and rabbits, earthworms and pigs, cows and horses, unicorns and bees. I learn to ask, what do you feel like doing today? and to chase that without permission. I learn that the day is for day things and the night is for winding down, except when one is on a sugar high. I learn that we are learning models too, always in need of fine-tuning. That our days can be a series of wide-eyed wonders. From her, I learn that every day is truly a new day – the aches and joys of yesterday left behind. I learn persistence: that if you want a thing, you go after it. I learn the importance of desire, and of throwing a tantrum if denied. I learn that loud tears and loud giggles are both life-affirming. Finally, from my daughter, I learn mischief. That it starts with the eyes.
